The Legacy of AJS Motorcycle Club
Founded in 1923, AJS Motorcycle Club (AJSMCC) has been a cornerstone of Western Australian motocross for over 100 years. What started as a small gathering of AJS motorcycle enthusiasts quickly evolved into one of the most respected clubs in the region. From humble beginnings to a major force in the Australian motocross scene, AJS has played a pivotal role in shaping the sport we love today.
Our Origins
On August 14, 1923, a group of passionate AJS motorcycle enthusiasts came together under the leadership of Mr. M. Leverington, leading to the formation of the AJS Motorcycle Club. The first committee was formed with Mr. Evans as President, Mr. J. Gordon and Mr. Geo. Dunton as Vice Presidents, Mr. Leverington as Secretary, and Mr. H. Thornton as Treasurer.
Milestones Through the Decades
The early years of AJS were filled with innovation and competition. Key milestones include:
- 1930: The first open pillion trial.
- 1936: The inaugural open sidecar trial.
- 1947: The first open teams club event, showcasing the growing community of motocross enthusiasts.
A Defining Era: The 1970s
The 1970s marked a golden era for AJS, with Pelle Granquist making history as the first rider to win the Australian 250/500cc Motocross Championships in consecutive years (1978 and 1979). Riding his Husqvarna, Granquist claimed victories at the Broadford (VIC) and Wanneroo Park (WA) circuits, defeating top Australian riders like Stephen Gall and Anthony Gunter. The 1979 Championships at Wanneroo Park also saw a range of memorable performances from local heroes like Neville Cutts, Shane Kirkpatrick, and Jeff Leisk, who won his first Junior Championship, marking the start of a legendary career.
The International Motocross Series
In the 1960s and 70s, AJS was integral to the success of the International Motocross Series, introduced by Australian motocross legend Tim Gibbes. The club regularly hosted the first round of this prestigious series at the Herne Hill circuit on the outskirts of Perth, bringing international riders and fans together, elevating the profile of the sport across Australia and New Zealand.
A Club With a Rich Tradition
From its early days to today, AJS Motorcycle Club has remained a place where riders, enthusiasts, and families come together to share in the joy of motocross. The spirit of friendly competition, community, and camaraderie continues to thrive, with AJS playing an integral part in the ongoing development of the sport in Western Australia.
As we celebrate over a century of history, AJS Motorcycle Club continues to honor the legacy of its founding members while looking forward to a bright future of motorsport excellence.
